Abuja Schools Resume New Session

On Monday 12th November, primary and secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory – Abuja resumed for the first term of the 2020/2021 Academic Session. In March, the 2019/2020 academic session was cut short when schools were shut down across the country in a desperate attempt by the government to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

However, while state governments across the country subscribed to an abridged third term for 2019/2020 academic session, the Department of Quality Assurance of the Education Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory has announced the resumption of pupils into a new session – 2020/2021. This was contained in a release dated Friday 9th October and signed by the Acting Director of the Department of Quality Assurance of the FCT Education Secretariat, Akpata R. T.

Details of the academic calendar for the new session include resumption for the first term of school scheduled for 11th October 2020. The first term, which is expected to last for 10 weeks will end on Friday, 18th December 2020. After which there will be two weeks holiday spanning 19th December to 3rd January 2021. The second term of school starts on Sunday 3rd January 2021 and ends 31st March after 13 weeks. On 25th April 2021, the last term of the session is expected to begin, and it is expected to grind to a halt on the 24th July 2021.

The release reference FCT/EDSPI/SPA/026/436 which was addressed to stakeholders in education noted that all COVID-19 protocols should be observed, all public holidays should be observed. It also directed private schools that may wish to resume earlier or later than the stipulated dates to seek approval of the Department.
