On Saturday the 26th of February, the Association of Campus Journalist, Obafemi Awolowo University inducted a new set of members. The ceremony, which takes place every session, is done to usher in new set of individuals into the association who will carry on the legacy of the association. The program started at about few minutes past 11am with an opening prayer and introductions.
Giving her speech, the President, Alofe Faith urged the new members to always be truthful, credible and accountable in performing their duties as campus reporters within and outside the university community. She also appreciated the guest speakers for making out time to attend the ceremony.
One of the guest speakers, Mr. Ifedayo Ogunyemi who is a senior reporter in Nigerian Tribune, spoke to the inductees on the concept of solution journalism where he urged all participants to use their stories to make positive changes in the society. Likewise Hammed Oyegbade, an Osun State correspondent, took the inductees through what journalism entails, the roles of campus journalist and their ability to use their platforms to hold personalities and organisations accountable. In the same vein, the erstwhile Chairman of the Guild of Editors of the Association, Peter Oyebamiji, shared his experience as campus reporter and spoke to the inductees on practical ways to carry out their duties as reporters on campus.
Another major event of the day was launching of the association’s website. The website, which was officially launched by Mr Ifedayo Ogunyemi, who informed the people about how user friendly the website is and urged members to use the platform effectively.
The President of the Association, Faith Alofe, while addressing the people about the website said; “This current administration figured that it will be good for the association as the umbrella body of all registered news agencies on campus to have its own website for easy access to news, fact checking of news publication and also avail her members the opportunity to work on investigative reports. She further appreciated the executive council members, Media and Career Development Network, owned and managed by Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin who fully supported taking up the task of setting up the website making it possible to launch it.”
The program finally ended with the new inductees taking the oath and giving out of certificates to them.
