Ajasin Varsity Management Declares Mid-Semester Break As Students Protest

Barely a year after the students of Adekunle Ajasin University in Akungba-Akoko took to the streets of Akure, the Ondo State capital, to protest against a 500% increase in their tuition fee, the students have staged another protest at the University campus over the ‘No Payment, No Examination’ modality set up by the institution.

The mid-semester test, which began on Tuesday the 23rd of April 2019, has reportedly been put on hold and all students have been informed to proceed on a sudden mid-semester break due to the protest staged by the majority of the 200L students of the institution over the aforementioned modality.

In an interview with an anonymous 200L student of the Department of History and International Studies, he said the management ought to be considerate, owing to the fact that it is the increment of the tuition fee that has hindered many of them from paying.

“How would you expect a student who has been struggling to pay N30,000 to now suddenly start paying over N150,000?” He asked.

He claimed that since the tuition fee will eventually be paid by the students, the management should not hinder them from writing their tests.

“We learnt that management has conspired with the Student Union Government, as Sampraise (the Student Union President) was seen in the examination hall while hundreds of students were protesting on campus and we all know he’s supporting the University management on this modality,” he emphasised.

A few hours after the protest, a general circular was released by the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of the Senate and signed by the Registrar of the University, Dr M.S. Ayeerun, stating that all students of the University should proceed on a mid-semester break immediately. According to the circular, all students have been asked to vacate the University campus and Halls of residence and resume on the 20th of May, 2019.

All efforts to speak with the Student Union President in the person of Comrade Adesomoju Samuel, popularly known as Sampraise, has proved abortive as no one knows where he has been since the time of the protest.
