On Monday the 31st of January 2022, the Academic Staff Union of Universities Obafemi Awolowo University branch (ASUU OAU) declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike following a congress by the members of the Union.
The congress was called to order at about 10:16 am on Monday where the Chairman of the Union, Adeola Egbedokun PhD, briefed the members on the series of engagements the Executives of the Union have had with some senior members of the University community. He also reported on his phone conversation with the University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede.
However, the congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the University to effect the payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) to deserving members of the union. The Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglio has failed after the previous congress, which was held on Tuesday 11th of January, 2022.
Consequently, the congress resolved that:
i. Total, Comprehensive and Indefinite Strike should commence immediately.
ii. The strike must not be called off without a Congress resolution to the effect.
iii. Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable.
iv. The strike coordinating committee must be set up to monitor the strike.
Based on the above and on the strength of permission granted by the ASUU National President, the chairman on behalf of the congress declared the commencement of the ASUU OAU strike at exactly 11:53 am.
The Congress rose and was adjourned at about 12 noon.
