ASUU Strike: UDUS Students Depart Campus

Following the recent declaration of a two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, have started moving out of the campus.

The university chapter of the union is yet to comply with the strike, which was declared by the ASUU national president, Biodun Ogunyemi, on Monday the 9th of March 2020.

In a meeting held with the students’ union on Tuesday at the union secretariat, the chapter chairman of ASUU in UDUS noted that the strike will commence on Wednesday the 11th of March, 2020 after the union’s congress.

However, while no official statement has been released from the UDUS chapter of ASUU regarding the University’s compliance with the national directive, many students of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, have departed campus for their respective homes.

Speaking with this reporter, a student who simply identified himself as Bashir, noted that he will use this two-week break to visit his family after two months of not being with them.

“To me, this strike is the best time to go back to my family. I have not been with them for two months,” he said.

Another student who spoke with this reporter anonymously said staying on the campus during the strike would be a waste of time.

“Personally, during the strike, staying on campus is nothing but a waste of time. There is nothing meaningful I will be doing,” he noted.
