COVID-19: University of Uyo Extends Closure Till Further Notice

The Management of the University of Uyo has extended the closure of the University until further notice.

This was contained in a statement signed on Wednesday by the University Registrar, Mr Aniedi-Abasi Udofia.

Mr Udofia revealed that the University will remain closed pending the determination of the lockdown order.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Enefiok Essien (SAN), has on behalf of Senate, directed that the University of Uyo should remain closed for normal duties pending the cessation of the current lockdown,” he said.

He noted that the closure will subsist until “further necessary directives from appropriate Federal Government agency on the re-opening of Tertiary Institutions in the country”.

The University Registrar disclosed that all staff on essential services will continue to perform their duties as scheduled.

While wishing them safety, the Vice-Chancellor also urged every member of the University Community to be hopeful in these times.

“The Vice-Chancellor has directed all staff, students and members of the University Community to adhere strictly to the directives of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in order to mitigate the spread of the cascading COVID-19 pandemic,” he stated.

The Management of the University of Uyo had announced the closure of the institution for a month on 23rd March 2020, in line with a directive from the National Universities Commission (NUC), due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

With a record of 873 confirmed cases including 28 deaths, the number of infected persons in Nigeria continues to rise, with no end in sight.
