EKSU Debunks Gunmen Attack Claims, Confirms Burglary and Arrest of Suspect

In the days following a robbery incident around student hostels near Ekiti State University (EKSU), a different kind of crisis has quietly emerged, one driven not by armed assailants, but by the rapid spread of misinformation.

Across social media platforms, particularly X and TikTok, conflicting accounts have continued to surface. Posts alleging “gunmen attacks,” coordinated raids, and widespread violence have circulated widely, often without verification.

However, on-the-ground findings present a more nuanced reality. While a security breach did occur, authorities have clarified that the incident involved burglary and theft, not an armed attack as widely portrayed online. In a press statement issued on March 31, the EKSU management addressed what it described as “highly controversial online publications,” noting that the situation had been misrepresented. 

“The actual incident that occurred was a reported case of burglary and forceful dispossession of students’ mobile phones by suspected miscreants, and this is not in any way related to the alleged attacks on students by gunmen,” the statement read.

The university further reassured students and the public that the situation had been brought under control, adding that normalcy had returned to the affected areas. 

Police authorities have also confirmed progress in the investigation.

According to a statement by the Ekiti State Police Command, one suspect linked to the incident was arrested in the early hours of March 30 by operatives of the Iworoko Divisional Police Headquarters. Items recovered included a motorcycle and a face mask believed to have been used during the operation.

The suspect has since been transferred to the State Headquarters for further investigation and possible prosecution, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing individuals. Despite these developments, unverified narratives continue to shape public perception. Several hostels named in viral reports have denied experiencing any attack. 

Residents in some locations described hearing disturbances or attempted intrusions, but not the large-scale assaults portrayed online.

For many students, the distinction matters.

“There’s fear everywhere,” a student said. “Even where nothing happened, people are panicking because of what they’re seeing online.” The ripple effects extend beyond campus, with parents and guardians reacting to alarming headlines and viral claims, often without access to verified updates.

In response to the incident, coordinated efforts by student leadership and security stakeholders have begun to take shape. In an official directive released by the Ekiti State University Students’ Union Government (SUG) following an emergency stakeholders’ meeting, a series of measures aimed at strengthening security within and around the university environment were announced.

These include a mandate for improved solar lighting across hostel areas to eliminate “dark zones,” enhanced power infrastructure to improve visibility, and stricter profiling of security personnel. Movement restrictions have also been introduced, including curfews and regulated transport operations, to improve monitoring and reduce vulnerability during late hours.

Security presence has also been reinforced. The university management noted that, in collaboration with government security agencies, intensified day and night patrols and surveillance operations are ongoing across affected areas, involving units such as the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), local police divisions, and EKSU security operatives.

Students have further been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, as authorities work to prevent further incidents and restore confidence within the university community. Beyond the immediate security response, the situation highlights a broader challenge in the digital age , the speed at which misinformation spreads, and its capacity to deepen fear during already tense situations.
