The Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, has recently split its Department of Mass Communication and renamed it for effective educational delivery.
This development is coming after the school management reached a unanimous decision during a meeting held on Monday, 29 January 2024, and the appointments took effect from Tuesday, 30 January, for a tenure of one year.
The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, as it is now designated, would encompass the Department of Mass Communication at the National Diploma (ND) level, the Department of Strategic Communication and Media Studies and the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at the Higher National Diploma (HND) level.
Campus Reporter learnt that Engr. Dr. Kadiri Kamoru Oluwatoyin, the Rector, charged two communication scholars with appointing department heads for each newly formed department.
Thus, Mr. Zakariyau Imran Toyin has been appointed the Head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, while Dr. Jimoh Olorede assumed the position of Head of the Department of Strategic Communication and Media Studies.
The Registrar of the institution, Mr. Gabriel Soko, noted the Acting Heads of the newly formed departments are to report to the Rector through the Dean of the school.
“Their responsibilities include fostering, developing, and assessing academic standards for all courses within the department. Additionally, they are tasked with ensuring staff commitment to the primary roles of teaching and research within the department, among other duties”.
“This structural adjustment aligns with the dynamic changes in academic offerings and reinforces the commitment to maintaining high educational standards,” Mr Soko noted in a circular.
Campus Reporter gathered that the change is not unconnected to a recent order by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in a press statement released in the wee hours of 8 January 2024 and signed by Prof. Idris Mohammed Bugaje Executive Secretary, mandating polytechnics across the country to undergo a division of its communication department into different parts in a bid to assure sustainable education.
