FG Makes A U-Turn On Ordering Resumption Decision

The Federal Government has made a U-turn on its directive to Vice-Chancellors, ordering them to reopen universities, which had been shut due to the lingering strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

In a statement signed by the Director of Finance and Accounts For Executive Secretary, Mr Sam M. Onazi, obtained by this campus reporter, dated 26th September 2022.

The circular reads, “I have been charged to withdraw the National University Commission (NUC) earlier circular on the forwarding of court judgment and enforcement of the order by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN).

Recall that the Union has been on strike for seven months for an agreement between them and FG, and the Federal government had gone to court to challenge the action of the association as the national industrial court asked the Union to return to work, pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.

The National Industrial Court had last Wednesday ordered lecturers to resume. An order which ASUU has now appealed.

The Federal Government through (NUC) has ordered Vice-Chancellors of universities to re-open schools and allow students to resume lectures immediately.

In response, the VC’s aim to hold a meeting with their pro-chancellors to review the Federal Government order.

The new circular advised VCs to await further directives from the National Universities Commission.

However, all Pro-Chancellors and Chairmen of Governing Councils, as well as Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities, are pleased to note that further development and information will be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.
