Last week, the Poets in Nigeria (PIN) initiative disclosed the top 81 poems for its sixth edition of the Nigerian Students Poetry Prize (NSPP). In this list, six students from the University of Ilorin were featured after going through rigorous scrutiny by a five-man judging panel.
Meanwhile, amongst the five top entrants from Unilorin, Abdul Kareem Abdul Kareem Oladimeji and Olafisoye Oluwatosin David made it to the longlisted entries with the poems titled; My Grandpa Tells Me Stories and Who I Am Is Who They Want Me To Be.
Some of the other entrants from Unilorin include Olowo Qudus Opeyemi (Beyond The Polls), Chisom Charles Nnanna, (A Boy Waiting By Tomorrow’s Tomb), Jimoh Aishat Omotolani (The Camouflage), and Samuel Ayegba Idoko (Writings On A Face).
In the Poets In Nigeria report of the shortlist on Tuesday, PIN highlighted “NSPP was instituted in 2016 to promote literary excellence amongst Nigerian undergraduates.” The NSPP sought to reward prize winners (top three entrants) with a consolidation total cash prize of N400,000.
Subsequently, the NSPP Award was held on Friday at the Conference Centre, University of Ibadan Hotel, Ibadan. The award ceremony unveiled the 6th edition of the NSPP anthology, a collection of the top 81 poems entries edited by Eriata Oribhabor and Kolade Olanrewaju Freedom. However, Samuel A. Ajeyemi, a student at Federal University, Lokoja won the Nigeria Students Poetry Prize 2021 edition with his poem, Portrait Of Water.
