The Students’ Union of the Federal University of Technology, Akure has condemned the alleged of harassment and extortion of an 100 level student of the university by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police force.
An 18-year-old undergraduate of the school was allegedly slapped by the SARS operatives and extorted to the tune of 5,000 naira during a visit to his brother’s place in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti state.
The student, whose identity was hidden for security purpose, was alleged by the operatives to be a cyber criminal after taking a cursory look on his phone. This resulted in the harassment of the student even after he displayed his school identity card, the Union claimed.
In a press release signed by Olaseinde Williams, the president and Fowowe Ayomide, the Public relations Officer on the 10th of January, it was stated that the SU would work ‘tirelessly’ to ensure safety of the students on and off the campus.
“(It’s) totally vexatious and unwarranted. We are currently making moves to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.
“We would love to establish that nothing of such occurred, and following this same issue we put a call through to the Ondo State commissioner of police.”
It urged students to make use of the FUTA SU Helplines to report any case of extortion to the officials at any point in time.
