Group signs multi-million dollar deal to build a power plant, other infrastructure in FUOYE

A consortium group FLYINGHIGH/PIKN ID has signed a multimillion-dollar agreement with the management of the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) to build a sufficient power plant and other facilities for the university’s Oye and Ikole campuses.

The memorandum of understanding was signed between Jide-David Modede and Femi Ajayi of FLYINGHIGH/PIKN ID with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Kayode Soremekun, and the institution’s Registrar, Mr Muftau Ibrahim on the 21st of January 2019.

Recall that two students of the institution, Oluwaseyi Kehinde and Joseph Okonofua, were killed during a protest on September 10, 2019.

Many other students were injured during the same incident when the students protested against the poor electricity supply in Oye and Ikole Ekiti.

The convoy of Bisi Fayemi, the wife of the Ekiti State governor, was also attacked during the protest.

The protest turned violent after a police officer attached to Mrs Fayemi’s convoy slapped a student leader, witnesses told this reporter at the time.

Despite the fatalities, the Police in Ekiti claimed its officers did not fire any shots and they are yet to identify the killer.

According to the Chairman of the consortium, Chief Jide David Modede, he said the motive of the project is to support the institution in its quest to provide standard education and for this, students need stable power supply.

“No standard educational institution in the 21st century can run without power to produce students that will compete on the global stage.”

“This also has cost the lives of 2 promising students, which must not be in vain.”

“It is sure to give students a worthwhile learning experience and aid the institution to deliver its training more effectively.”

Mr Modede said FUOYE will also become the first training and research centre for renewable energy in any Federal University in Nigeria.

He ended by saying better days lay ahead for the institution.
