Ife-Modakeke Residents Lament After Three-Day Downpour

The residents of Ile Ife and Modakeke in Osun State have decried the devastating effects of the heavy rains that fell between Sunday and Tuesday.

The downpour was said to have caused flooding, affecting roads, houses, shops and churches in several Ife-Modakeke communities, such as Akarabata, Owode, Oju Odo, and Mayfair.

The residents, who lamented huge losses, said rainstorm disrupted electricity supplies and that the flooded roads caused traffic gridlock, thereby hampering commercial activities in the communities.

Our correspondent who visited the affected communities observed poor drainage systems.

While some families were seen draining water from their homes using pumping machines, others were using bowls.

In Modakeke, some overwhelmed residents watched helplessly as their valuables were swept away.

“I was not at home when the rain began, only my children were at home and they can only do little to stop the rain from flooding our one bedroom apartment,” said Taiwo Kosemani.

“I have to put them (children) in friends place the following day. They have not been to school this week because we are yet to get our balance.”

Another resident and student of Oduduwa University, Kemi Ojo, said, “all efforts made to avoid our valuables being swept proved abortive.”

It would be recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET had earlier on Sunday predicted the atmospheric conditions that led to the devastations in Ile-Ife.
