The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of an operative of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lukman Gbadamosi, who, on Thursday evening, allegedly shot Tunde Nafiu, a 30-year-old resident of Iwo in Osun State.
The police also said 31 of the protesters, who allegedly burnt a police station following the murder, had been arrested.
The Osun police spokesperson, Folasade Odoro, confirmed the development on Saturday, adding that all those arrested had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department in Osogbo.
“The situation has been brought under control while people are going about their lawful businesses,” said Ms Odoro.
The deceased, Mr Nafiu, was a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Iree, this newspaper learnt.
According to eyewitnesses, a stray bullet suspected to have been fired by Mr Gbadamosi killed him. The incident happened as the SARS operatives were shooting to disperse a crowd of people during a carnival in the town around 9:30 pm on Thursday.
Consequently, irate residents gathered in protest and burned down the police in the town.
