On Saturday, 19th June 2021, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) began conducting the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, which is a required examination for entrance into higher institutions across the country.
Last month, JAMB postponed the examinations initially scheduled to begin from June 5th to 19th due to the inability of many candidates to register because of the compulsory National Identity Number required for the registration.
A visit by this reporter to one of the centres picked by JAMB for the conduct of the examination, Allbest Allied ICT and Vocational centre at Ogo Oluwa Area of Osogbo, Osun State, to observe the situation of things on Saturday revealed a calm environment and a hitch-free exercise. Men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps were also on the ground to provide security.
In an interview with a candidate, who simply identified himself as Samuel, he noted that the process went on almost smoothly. He, however, noted that some candidates had issues with the computer provided to write their examination but were swiftly attended to and were able to write. Samuel also noted that his exam, which was supposed to start at 9 am, was delayed for about forty-five minutes.
Another candidate, identified as Iqmot said: “I have always used an external mouse in preparing for Computer Based Tests (CBT) but I was surprised when I got to the examination hall and couldn’t find one, I had to call one of the invigilators who shouted at me before showing me how to use the laptop inbuilt mouse.”
Similarly, on Sunday, JAMB announced the delisting of 25 CBT Centres nationwide for their failure in the conduct of the examination on Day 1 of the exercise. The centres in 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory will have candidates assigned to them initially reassigned to other centres. The affected candidates have been asked to look forward to receiving further directives from JAMB through their UTME Profile, email address and telephone number.
While Lagos has the highest number of affected centres, with 6 affected. Oduduwa University, Ipetumodu, Osun State is the only centre affected in Osun State. The examination is expected to continue on Monday as Day 2 of the exercise.
