The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has promised a 25 per cent reduction in the fees of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, LAUTECH, Ogbomoso, across the board, in a bid to make education accessible to all.
Engineer Makinde made this declaration during his visit to the state-owned citadel of learning on Tuesday the 1st of June 2021. He maintained that the reduction will affect both indigenous and non-indigenous students of the institution.
Governor Makinde further promised to review the academic calendar of the institution, adding that the students’ four-year courses will not be extended unnecessarily.
In his opening remarks, he said: “After the 2019 election I should have been here to come and say thank you to you, but I don’t want to come until I fulfil what I promised you, which is the sole ownership of LAUTECH by Oyo State. I promised to fix Under-G stadium road so that none of our students will be killed on the main road. Now the road is fixed and you have street lights installed.
“Never again will four years course turn to eight years in LAUTECH. Let me tell you, and you can check it out, LAUTECH’s fee is still the lowest in the entire South West. Having said that I will reduce your fee across the board whether indigenes or non-indigenes or for new students, there will be a fee reduction of 25 per cent across the board.”
In response to the promise of the governor, the acting chairman of the Student Union of the institution, Olamide Olabiyi, who had earlier pleaded for a reduction of tuition fees, appreciated the governor. He described the proposed reduction as a great and remarkable feat.
“It is a great feat and a remarkable one considering the situation of the country. I know there is more needed to be done, but we need to appreciate this for more and more to come.”
Governor Makinde is currently visiting regions in Oyo State in celebration of his two years in office.
