Man jailed 40 years for raping 17-year-old daughter

A 53-year-old electrician, Folorunsho Oluwaseun, has been sentenced to 40 years in jail for raping his 17-year-old daughter.

Delivering the judgement, Hon. Justice Sybil Nwaka of the Lagos State Special Offences Court convicted Oluwaseun after finding him guilty of defilement and sexual assault by penetration.

She said the offence contravened Sections 134 and 137 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2011.

In a trial which started in 2018, it was revealed that the accused sexually assaulted his 17-year-old daughter for over six years, a crime he allegedly perpetrated at his residence at No. 40 Popoola Street, in Ikorodu, Lagos.

But Oluwaseun repeatedly denied the allegations, alleging malice stemming from the fight he previously had with his wife.

However, forensic evidence presented by Dr Elizabeth Olatunji of the Department of Family Medicine, Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, indicated that the victim had a long and repeated history of penile penetration, which lasted for six years.

Dr Olatunji, also noted that reports from the medical examination revealed that the victim sustained injuries to her hymen which stemmed from the penile penetrations.

“The main finding was on the hymen. There was a transition on the hymen. The victim said her father began to sleep with her not long after her mother left them,” she told the court.

Justice Nwaka, who declared that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt, sentenced the accused to 40 years in prison, to be served at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, with no option of fine.
