As part of a tech community development initiative, the Microsoft Learn Student Ambassador Program officially launched its Microsoft Student Community in Ekiti State on Thursday, the 27th of October, 2022. The Microsoft Learn Student Ambassador program was formed in 2001 by Microsoft to sponsor students majoring in disciplines related to technology.
The event, which took place at the Bizannex building at Ekiti State University, was graced by a large number of tech enthusiasts and began with an interactive introductory session where Goodness Olawoore, a gold Microsoft learn student ambassador, delivered the opening speech.
Goodness gave a speech on the five new platforms Microsoft has just reeled out, known as the “Power Platforms.” These platforms help users design, develop and automate their businesses while improving the ease of carrying out certain computing activities. He asserted that these apps need almost no programming codes to operate.
A presentation was given by Favour Adeshina, who was the host of the program. He spoke about the seven P’s of the community, the advantages of joining the community, and gave personal testimonies on how the community gave him access, as well as how he secured a job through the community.
The last speech was given by the special guest, Olanrewaju Oyinbooke, a Senior Cloud Advocate at Microsoft, during which he shared a detailed story on his tech career journey. He stressed the importance of acquiring a skill while on campus and developing it professionally. He also spoke on the advantages of joining the community while sharing useful resources and websites where interested participants could get more information.
Speaking with our reporter, the host, Favour Adeshina, spoke on what inspired him to host the event. He said: “I had a meeting with Mr Olanrewaju Oyinbooke, and we spoke on how we could improve the tech community in Ekiti state, and I used that opportunity to pitch the idea of him coming to inspire the community populace and give them advice according to his experience.”
Speaking with Mr Olanrewaju Oyinbooke, he stressed the point of taking the tech story around all campuses in Ekiti. He said: “Diversity and inclusion is the primary reason for this event. You see, in Nigeria, not all universities have facilities that aid learning tech. Some universities lack this community, and Ekiti State institutions are also far from these tech opportunities, and I find this community pivotal to spread and democratise technology skills for students in higher institutions.”
When asked about his advice to the Ekiti student populace, he said: “The right time to invest in your future is today. One thing you should know is that your course of study should not stop you from learning skills, and skills are everywhere. It is important that you maximise your time on campus so as you are studying, you are also building up your skills. There is always a Microsoft community on your campus. Find them and join the community.
The closing remarks were given by the compere, and the event ended with a group photograph.
