NANS Announces National Action Against ASUU Strikes

Following the ongoing one-month warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced February 28th, 2022 as the National Action Day against ASUU’s incessant strike actions, tagged #ENDASUUSTRIKEPERMANENTLYNOW.

This was contained in a circular signed by the president of the body, Comrade Asefon Sunday and the general secretary, Adekitan Lukman.

The circular read: “Solidarity greetings to the entire Nigerian Students. Following the resolution of the supreme organ of our dear Association being ” Congress”. In our congress held on Saturday 19th February 2022 at Sokoto State University among other matters discussed and considered, it was resolved that we act decisively to rescue our future and the tertiary education system which is our major concern from total collapse.”

NANS has also declared the blockage of all major federal roads in all the 36 States of the federation which will be led by the NANS JCC and Zonal Executives including national officials of the body until their demands are met.

The circular further added that the Federal Capital territory will be blocked by the National secretariat in collaboration with the FCT axis, which they said is sacrosanct since the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of universities have failed to prioritise the reopening of universities.

However, the body said Nigerian students can not continue to pay for an offence they did not commit, adding that students are paying for their education and deserve the best.

“At the end of every industrial action, ASUU members will get paid their salaries as well as the government officials in charge of education supervision,” the body added.

“It is only Nigerian students that get nothing but a waste of everything, the house rent is non-refundable, the age count is irreversible. The extension of stay on campus did not only affect our academic journey but destabilized our life plans, as many missed NYSC mobilization due to the age limit.”

NANS reiterated that the ASUU strike has caused many students to lose job opportunities while others are exposed to risks and crime due to the avoidable strike.
