The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has suspended a planned protest over the postponement of the country’s General Elections.
The National Public Relations Officer of the union, Azeez Adeyemi, announced this on Monday while addressing newsmen at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Adeyemi said the union decided to suspend the nationwide protest due to trusted information it received on the plan of some criminals, sponsored by enemies of the nation, to hijack the voice of the people.
He added that the students’ organization and citizens of Nigeria are still suffering from the shock of what he described as the ‘instigated postponement’ of the elections, influenced by a few people.
“We want to quickly remind President Muhammadu Buhari that INEC is handicapped without your support and you choose to allow these cabals to sleep well in their comfort[able] rooms, it simply means your personal integrity and your government is going to be dented.
“We observed that the INEC Chairman is left in the domain of many dependent vices against the autonomy of the commission, we know you know them, you are happy with them, we advise you to fish them out and caution them. They are in your party and other parties.
“We hereby give another 24 hours for them to install the confidence in and promise Nigerians a free and fair elections, or else we shall take up the streets, write to international bodies and the ICC to notify them of your interest in killing Nigeria democracy,” he said.
Additionally, Adeyemi urged the youths to shun any act of electoral violence, explaining that politicians are not worth dying for.
“We must, however, inform the malicious, criminals shooting from the umbrella of NANS, that they should go and return the money they collected from Nigeria politicians, we disown them today, they are not our members, they are thieves and enemies of the student community.”
