As at 7 p.m. on the 21st of March 2022, official data confirmed that the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) led in medal wins at the ongoing Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) competition hosted by the University of Lagos.
As it stands, UNIPORT athletes have racked up 14 gold medals, 5 silver medals and 9 bronze medals corresponding to a cumulative of 28 medals. A reasonable fraction of their gold medals came from swimming competition.
Coming second in medal wins in this circumstance is the University of Lagos (UNILAG) with 4 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 4 bronze medals. UNILAG athletes have therefore accumulated a total of 14 medals — half that of UNIPORT’s.
Nile University of Nigeria also managed to accumulate half of UNILAG’s total medal wins, amounting to a total of 7 medal wins — 3 gold medals, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
While this has created a beautiful pattern in medal wins in the first three high ranking universities, other competing universities have also offered their best at NUGA2022.
The competition, which commenced with the arrival of universities on March 16, is slated to end by March 27.
The margin with which UNIPORT leads UNILAG in total medal wins is conspicuous to a large extent. This brings to mind a question of whether other universities can pick up momentum and close the margin up to an extent.
UNIPORT has emerged winner of 6 consecutive editions of the NUGA competition, racking up the most medals in the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th and 25th editions of the competition. The editions took place in 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2017, respectively.
UNIPORT has also won 4 consecutive editions of the West African University Games (WAUG) — the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th editions — which took place in 2003, 2008, 2012 and 2018, respectively.
History may repeat itself in this current edition — the 26th — of the NUGA competition with UNIPORT accumulating the most medals again. Truly then, they are UNISPORT.
