The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has decided to prosecute any students or persons caught hacking the university’s staff Information Technology and Communications Unit (INTECU) access.
In a statement released by the school management in their monthly bulletin for May, it was gathered that the school management has discovered that some persons or students are illegally accessing the University’s Staff INTECU access, effectively hindering members of staff from accessing the site.
“It has to come to our notice that some students and non-students are hacking lecturers’ internet access through a fraudulent application. The rightful owner will be hindered from using the internet to perform his/her lawful duties while these miscreants will be using the access that someone else is charged for.”
“These culprits also Share this hacking application to other partners in crime thereby escalating the level of illegality and thus make the access porous to many unauthorized users,” a part of the statement reads.
Furthermore, it was gathered from the statement that non-students and some students have been apprehended and appropriately dealt with for this dastardly act.
“On 14th of April, 2019 a non-student was caught hacking into a lecturer’s internet account. Upon investigation. It was revealed that a student of our university gave the access application to him.”
“Meanwhile, some other students of this university have been arrested for the same offence and have been appropriately dealt with,” the statement reports.
The management sternly warned perpetrators of this act, reminding them that hacking is a criminal offence punishable by law and anyone apprehended will be handed over to the appropriate quarters for possible prosecution.
“It should be noted that hacking is a criminal offence punishable under the law. It is therefore pertinent to sound a note of warning to all students or would-be-hackers to desist from this act as anyone caught will be handed over to the appropriate authority for further investigation and possible prosecution,” management warned.
