Water scarcity has hit Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, following disruption of supplies to the halls of residence for over 48 hours.
The disruption has forced the students, currently writing second-semester examinations, to resort to streams that flow through the campus as well as other alternative sources, such as the banks in the school, for water to bathe, wash and cook, our correspondent witnessed.
Olusola Oludiran, a student who spoke to our correspondent, said after sighting a long queue Saturday morning along one of the female hostels, he had no option than to go fetch at the stream.
Also, Muhammed Olayinka, a student and occupant of Akintola Hall, lamented that her friends had to go to Access Bank to get water to take their bath.
“I have a paper to write today and I don’t think I’ll take my bath today,” she said.
Yet another student, Ologbenla Taiwo, said he would have to go outside campus because of the water scarcity on campus. “The situation is unbearable,” he added.
Meanwhile, in a conversation with a Hall chair, Akindipe Israel, he revealed that the water pump at the university dam is faulty.
He assured that the officers are working towards getting it done and that water will be supplied very soon through the water tankers.
“We are bringing water to the halls very soon,” he promised.
As at the time of filing this report, CAMPUS REPORTER gathered that students are being seen with kegs and buckets, looking aimlessly for a water source.
