Ogun Poly Students Vow To Shut Down Abeokuta As Uncertainties Surround Their Futures

Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, with uncertainties around their futures by Ogun State Government, since their school was converted to university, have vowed one-week protest.

The protest – tagged “Black Week” – is coming as response to the failure of the Ibikunle Amosun-led government to ensure resolution of industrial dispute that has led to inactivity in the school for months, conveners of the protest told CAMPUS REPORTER on Friday.

Black Week will start on Monday in Abeokuta, they said.

“We believe that the Ogun State Government has no good plan for the entire students of MAPOLY but to put all our glittering futures on hold because of its selfish political agenda,” the conveners, student leaders, said.

They had asked the state government to meet their demands within ‘one-week ultimatum’, which they said ended 11:59 pm on Tuesday.

They stated consequences of further closure of their school.

“The consequences are extra year for HND 2 and ND 2 students, present ND2 students will tentatively spend two years on Industrial Training (IT), HND 2 students would be unable to join their compatriots for NYSC April/May batch, ND1 students to spend elongated time on SIWES, thereby extending their expected two years of study, and causing landlord and students’ fracas over due house rent.

“It will be important for all of us to see this as collective duty by coming to Abeokuta for this massive protest, which we believe will resonate our grievances to the Governor,” they said.

They further called for support of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, National and state, National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS and National Association of Ogun State Students, NAOSS.

They affirmed that they would not hesitate to keep holding Abeokuta Metropolis into ransom until their demands are met.
