On Saturday evening, a truck loaded with wooden planks collided with an empty truck along the Ilorin- Ajase road, Omupo area of Kwara State.
While the empty truck was badly damaged, the one containing planks fell on the other side of the road, spewing its load into the bushes around the road.
This newspaper witnessed the aftermath of the accident where over seven passersby helped in rescuing the victims. The path was blocked as men of the Road Safety Corps directed vehicles to an undisturbed side of the road.
CAMPUS REPORTER learnt that there was no casualty except for one of the truck drivers, who sustained injuries and had to be transported to a nearby clinic.
Speaking with CAMPUS REPORTER, an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Omupo who led a rescue team, B.M. Adeleye, explained that the avoidance of potholes coupled the short width of the lanes led to the accident.
“The empty truck was trying to avoid potholes and the one loaded with planks could not swerve to the other side of the road. The accident was unavoidable.”
“As you can see we are on the top of the situation,” he added.
Unfortunately, all efforts to speak with the drivers proved futile as none of them was available at the scene when our reporter got there.
Meanwhile, this reporter observed that the road where the accident occurred is in a poor condition, with road users complaining about the numerous potholes and the urgent need for rehabilitation.
