Security men commonly referred to as ‘Baba Blue’ in Bayero University, Kano, have arrested a suspected automobile thief who has been accused of stealing a motorcycle around the Faculty of Engineering on Thursday the 4th of July.
He was confronted around the student bus stop operated by the university and when chants of “Barawo!” (thief) rang through the air, he reportedly tried to escape with the stolen bike.
After stopping him in his tracks, bystanders learnt he was not a student of the university and a small mob formed around him before security personnel whisked him away.
According to a source who witnessed the event unfold, “I was coming from coke village when I heard people shouting Barawo (thief). It was two of them, one stole a car and the other one a bike, the one who was trying to steal a car was caught in the process while the other one who stole the bike was running and…was caught. Although, it was the security who later came to his rescue.”
According to Abubakar Haruna, a student from the Department of Computer Science, when the suspect was identified as a thief, he tried to deny it but was stopped by a bike man as students descended on him, attacking him.
He added that about a minute later, a security man was on the scene and as he tried to take the suspect away, he received some lashes of the cane meant for the suspect.
Recall that there has been an incessant wave of theft in the school where valuable items such as phones, motorbikes and more have been reportedly stolen by unknown individuals.
The suspect has been taken into custody and is currently with campus security. All attempts to speak with the security were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
