Only Six Per cent Of JAMB Applicants To UI Successful

Only six per cent of the candidates that applied, in 2017, to the University of Ibadan for studies towards Bachelor’s degree were offered admission, figures released by the school showed.

According to an official disclosure obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, a total of 56,172 candidates applied to the institution through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, but only 3,783 candidates emerged successful gaining admission to study various courses.

The numbers represent candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and the Direct Entry (DE) pathway, both managed by the JAMB, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for academics, Adeyinka Aderinto said.

Giving further breakdown, Mr. Aderinto a total of 26,769 candidates, who scored 200 and above, sat for the Post-UTME of the university and only 9,268, that is 34 per cent, of them scored at least 50 per cent. Then, 3,783 were recommended to JAMB for admission , having met the approved admission criteria.

According to Prof. Aderinto, “We have commenced the examinations (for second semester 2016/17 session). We have also recommended about 3,783 candidates to JAMB for admission and we are concluding the admission process by January ending.”

He continued: “We are committed to meeting NYSC mobilisation for the 2017/2018 National Youth Service hence the second semester examinations in the university have begun. The examination will end the 2016/2017 session.

“This is what makes us who we are in offering qualitative education to our students to be the best in Nigeria and have the capacity to compete globally,” he said.
