Press Release: CJID Concludes 2024 Cohort of Next Gen Internship Programme

ABUJA, 25 January 2025 – The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has officially concluded its 2024 cohort of the Next Gen Internship Programme. The programme, which ran from September to December, equipped nine recent graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful journalism career.

Launched in 2021 under CJID’s Next Gen/Campus Reporter Project, the internship programme aims to provide participants with essential knowledge, experience, and mentorship to excel in the journalism industry. This cohort’s participants were paired with reputable media organisations, including Dataphyte, The Jurist, Ogene FM, Big Cabal Media and the centre itself, CJID. Others are Crisp Nigeria, Confidence News, The Hope Newspaper, and Buk Radio and Television.  

At the cohort wrap-up meeting on January 24th, participants appraised the programme’s impact on their budding careers, describing it as an invaluable mentorship and portfolio-building opportunity. Ndidiamaka Ede who interned at Crisp Nigeria, for instance, produced impactful stories that showcased her storytelling skills and highlighted critical societal issues like the potential effect of birth registration challenges on Nigerians’ future. Other participants, such as Peter Emmanuel, Samuel Sodunke, and Chidalu Glory, successfully transitioned into new journalism niches, including Tech, Human Rights, and Broadcast Journalism. Some of their articles revolved around How African Founders Say Their Jobs Affect Their Mental Health and What the Law Says About the Detention of Minors in Nigeria.

Other participants also achieved notable milestones. Salako Emmanuel developed his media research and data analytics skills while interning at Dataphyte. Stella Adeniyi gained valuable experience in the Media Development space with CJID. Taofeeq Imam and Fatimah Idera honed their newsroom skills at Confidence News and The Hope Newspaper, respectively. Harrison Osaobuohien worked with BUK Radio and Television, gaining hands-on experience in broadcast journalism.

Throughout the programme, interns contributed to the media ecosystem by producing  In-depth reports, data stories, fact-checks, analyses, explainers, and radio programmes on critical societal issues. They will continue to deliver essential reports and contribute to the media ecosystem, leveraging the mentors and networks they gained during the programme.

CJID will hold another cohort of the Next Gen Internship Programme in 2025. Student journalists are encouraged to look out for the Call for Applications, which will be circulated on Campus Reporter’s social media platforms.

Over the years, CJID’s Next Gen/Campus Reporter Project has built a reputation for empowering the next generation of journalists through a holistic Training, Internship and Mentorship (TIM) framework. Notably, many of the project’s alumni have become outstanding mainstream journalists in leading newsrooms. Some include Yusuf Akinpuelu of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Alao Abiodun of the Nation Newspaper, Kemi Adelagun of Premium Times and Zainab Adam of SMK Radio.
