Among other underserved areas in Ekiti State, the Iworoko community has suffered from poor water supply for more than two years. The slight solution propelled in the community was the provision of outer water pipes from houses with boreholes to less privileged dwellers.
On Esther street, two boreholes are working, but they are not enough to serve houses in that location.
“Nothing has been done by the community to get the problem solved. Some of the water projects are either abandoned or left uncompleted. Not even boreholes in public schools are working. This has become challenging for students, teachers and the whole community,” said one of the residents.
Mrs Bola Idowu, a petty trader in the Iworoko market cried out for government intervention as the community lacks a lot of social amenities.
Meanwhile, the Councillor of the Iworoko Community, Hon. Temitope in an interview explained that the issue of poor water facilities is not new to the community and is a decade-old problem.
“I cannot recall when last I saw a water facility working in Iworoko-Ekiti, which is as a result of the soil profile. However, most of the projects done also lack maintenance and that is applicable to water facilities. The community is not ready to maintain any project.”
He also stated that the borehole at Odo-Oyi, which is a constituency project, has never worked and that it has been there for decades.
Mr Andrew Joseph, who is a businessman in the community said that people sometimes bathe with sachet water because wells in the community are dried up.
“I’ve never seen a borehole in this vicinity,” he said.
