A member of the Convention Planning Committee for the National Association of Nigerian Students election, Adamu Kabir Matazu (Karoll), has said that as the Association elects new President every year and will celebrate the convention with sporadic shooting wherever it holds.
Adamu made the statement on Twitter on the 4th of December 2020, after a viral shooting video from the NANS convention surfaced. In the video, people were seen running helter-skelter for their safety while gunshots are heard.
Adamu Kabir Matazu (@KabirMtz onTwitter) in his unedited tweet said: “I’m part of the Convention Planning Committee (CPC). This sporadic shooting during NANS Convention is an annual ritual that must be observed in order to test the ruggedity of candidates contesting for NANS Presidency. But normalcy has been restored, and things are moving smoothly.”
Reactions from students and the general public following his tweet condemned his statement, the violence NANS portrayed during the convention and the election of a new administration.
A reaction from Ruby Esther (@RubyEsther3) on Kabir’s statement goes thus:
“Omo, you guys should be ashamed of yourselves for dragging the Nigerian youths to the mud. Discrediting the future political competence of Nigerian Youths. Ordinary NANS election, you guys couldn’t organize peacefully without raising dusts (sic).”
Still, the 2020 NANS election has been held and a new President has been elected. The elected President, Sunday Asefon, is said to be aged 43 years old (unverified).
