UDUS Produces Ventilator To Ease Pressure on Nigerian Healthcare

As governments across the globe scramble for ventilators to ease the pressure on hospitals as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has designed and produced a ventilator as part of its contribution to the fight against the pandemic in the country.

In a statement signed by the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Lawal Bilbis, the invention (which also includes a handwashing station) has been manufactured to improve the country’s healthcare delivery system beyond the pandemic.

While the varsity’s Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Design (FEED) built the ventilator, the Sokoto Energy Research Centre (SERC) – a research centre aimed at expanding solar and other renewable energy resources– designed the handwashing station.

For patients with the worst effects of COVID-19, a ventilator can offer the best chance of survival, it helps a patient who is unable to breathe by moving breathable air in and out of the lungs when the infection has caused the lungs to fail.

“The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), as part of its contributions in the management of the Corona-Virus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country and improvement on the Healthcare delivery beyond the Corona pandemic has designed and produced a Ventilator and an Automatic/Manual Hand Washing Stations. The products were designed and built by the Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Design (FEED) and the Sokoto Energy Research Centre (SERC).”

Meanwhile, Prof Bilbis noted that the products are still being subjected to clinical evaluations after which it would be presented to the public.

“Upon inventory, the University sent the products to experts for assessment and review. As at Monday, 11th May 2020, observations and comments from the experts were received and the University is addressing them with a view to perfecting the products. Once finalised, the products would be presented to the public.”
