UDUS Record Breaker Shines Abroad

A female graduate of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Fatimah Akinola Abdulwaheed, who emerged as the best graduating student in 2017 after breaking a 42-year-old record by emerging with a First Class in the Department of Mathematics, shines once more in the United States of America.

The 25-year-old Fatimah, who is a native of Ede in Osun State, celebrates as she rounds off her Master’s Program from Marshall University, with a grade of 4.0/4.0 in Mathematics. This was revealed in her Facebook post on Friday, 7th May 2021.

The post reads: “One of my proudest achievements so far in academia is proving Nigeria to the world!!!

“I graduated with a perfect 4.0/4.0 from my Master’s degree in Mathematics at the Marshall University. This feat gladdens my heart as it tells you what Nigerians are capable of!

“I finished my undergraduate degree in Mathematics with a First Class Honors 4.73/5.0. This was a stepping stone towards my masters, yes, however, given the difference in curriculum between the United States and Nigeria. It took more than a First Class to achieve the 4.0!”

The young lady also revealed that the next step for her is to pursue her PhD at the University of Florida on a fully-funded scholarship.

She continued: “I’m beyond humbled by my experience so far and it gladdens my heart to share that I will be joining the Department of Mathematics at the University of Florida come August/Fall 2021 to begin yet another sojourn towards my academia goals, as a PhD student, on a fully-funded program!”

Fatimah’s sister, Aisha Janki Akinola, in a celebratory post on LinkedIn, also disclosed that stellar performances in academia are commonplace with Fatimah.

According to Aisha, in 2017, Fatimah emerged as the best graduating student from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, breaking a 42-year-old record in the process as no female had achieved such feat in the department. Other amazing feats recorded by Fatimah, as highlighted by her, include:

“Was a campus journalist during her undergraduate years.

“Represented Sokoto State at several competitions, including the National Cowbell Mathematics competition for junior high schools at Lagos in 2009 and the National junior Mathematics Olympiad at Ibadan in 2009.

“Came first in Kano State (12th at National level) in Chemistry International Olympiad for Senior High Schools.

“Secured a 100% scholarship at the Nigerian Turkish International College for her Senior High School (2009 to 2012).”

Idris Ganiy Yinka, a colleague of Fatimah who referred to her as a ‘Mathematics Guru’, also congratulated the successful lady, making it known that her successes are not by chance but duly deserved because of her hard work.

Ganiy said: “FATIMAH AKINOLA – AKA HOD MATHEMATICS GURU AND SCHOLAR

“Her first Class honour during her first degree and how she graduated with a perfect 4.0/4.0 during her master’s degree wasn’t a mistake or by lucky chance if you really know her during her undergraduate degree in UDUS.

“If you’re in Mathematics, Computer science or Statistics Department and you don’t know her then, you’re either an unserious student or flippant. Even all the lecturers in the department know her badly for her brilliance and hard works. Congratulations, sister and friend.”
