One Million, Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira meant for special projects at the University of Jos has been allegedly embezzled by the student union government (SUG) President, Peter Duungshuut and Emmanuel Tatmang, SUG Financial Secretary.
The Public Relations Officer of the Union, Joshua Ugwumba, disclosed this in a press statement released on Wednesday. According to Mr Ugwumba, the President admitted that he used the funds for the maintenance of the union’s buses.
According to the statement, the nine members of the executive council have placed the matter before the University’s Directorate of Student Affairs for swift intervention and disciplinary action for the “unlawful withdrawal and fraudulent embezzlement of one million meant for student’s week and project execution” as well as “embezzlement of the sum of two hundred and sixty thousand contributed for the execution of projects at the Directorate of Student Affairs.”
Mr Peter and Tatmang have been under fire since the petition was made public. In his comment, a former SUG presidential aspirant in the University, Armstrong Zittas said: “This is sad news, but the good news is 9 persons stood out for what is truth, that means that’s hope for the union. In my opinion, until we step out to fight mediocrity and the toys in the hands of the radical, the few bad will always prevail over the many good.”
Since investigations are still on, the directorate and the accused declined to make comments as at press time.
