AAUA Professor Wins International Grant

Professor Sola Owonibi of the English department at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has been awarded a sum of $120,000 by the Centre for Medical Humanities of the University of Florida for research he carried out for a period of 24 hours.

The topic submitted by Professor Owonibi’s research team, “Reinventing Poetry As Therapy In African Literary Tradition” was among the chosen proposals received by the Centre of Medical Humanities for consideration.

These were contained in a letter signed by Landmir Gotzman, the Director of International Programmes of the University of Florida informing Professor Owonibi alongside his research partner, Professor Sakyi Baidoo of the University of Ghana. 

“I am pleased to announce to you that your research team has been awarded the 2019 Carnegie medical humanities research grant for experienced researchers.

Your proposal was evaluated very highly by an international panel of scholars and was considered as one of the five to be awarded out of the 218 proposals received globally. The total award of $120,000 is the consolidated grant approved for your fellowship,’’ the letter reads.

Meanwhile, professor Owonibi was awarded a sum of $30,000 for his project titled: “Re-Telling The War Story, Healing The Wounds: Bibliotherapeutic Reading Of Recent African Novels,” in 2017 under the Meaning-Making Research Award for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa. His performance at the Meaning-Making Research Initiative (MRI) was really commendable which put him among the 16 top researchers that came top among the 248 proposals received.

His outstanding feats have fetched him several appointments. Among them includes the fact that he is the Vice President of the Arts and Hearts Association Council of the International Arts for Teaching and Healing Institute in Winchester, United States of America.

Adekunle Ajasin University has congratulated professor Sola Owonibi for his notable achievements he has recorded in both Nigeria and outside the country.
