The Centre for Journalism Innovation & Development (CJID) through its Campus Reporter project has trained a host of campus editors at the NANCE 2022 convention in Lagos.
The National Association of Nigerian Campus Editors (NANCE) held its annual convention themed “Beyond the Practice of Campus Journalism” at the Student Union Arcade of the Lagos State University in Ojo, Lagos State between the 23rd to 26th of February 2022.
According to the outgoing National President of the Association; Adeleke Yusuf Olatunji (Buoyant), NANCE was formed in 2015 to help foster quality Campus Journalism in various campuses nationwide. He said the 4-day convention featured Campus Journalism Training conducted by Campus Reporter, a subsidiary of the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).
“The Centre for Journalism Innovation & Development (CJID) is a truly independent media landscape that advances fundamental human rights, good governance and accountability in West Africa,” as seen in the vision statement on the organisation’s website.
In the document containing the CJID training agenda, the training ran from 9 am to 2 pm each day with frequent breaks between 11 am to 1 pm. Also, this document indicated that Femke Van Zeijl, Busola Ajibola and Deji Adekunle taught diverse areas of News Reporting and Journalism which included Media Literacy, Accountability Media, Conflict Reporting, Fact-checking, Data Journalism and Investigative Journalism.
Speaking with Timothy Obinna, a participant of the convention who was with the University of Lagos Press Club, he claimed that Campus Journalists and Editors were well represented from over 10 tertiary institutions in Nigeria including the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ekiti State University, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (formerly LASPOTECH), amongst others.
