The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has, on the 9th of December 2020, confirmed the increment of school fees by 135% for incoming students for the 2020/2021 academic session.
This was made known in a bulletin published on the official website of Lagos State University, inviting applications for the 2020/2021 screening exercise for candidates seeking admission via UTME (100 level) and DIRECT Entry.
A total of Sixty Seven Thousand, Forty-Eight Naira and Fifty Kobo (N67,048.50) is to be paid per session, an increase from the Twenty Five Thousand Naira (25,000) regular fee.
The school’s management refuted rumours in 2019 that the institution was planning to increase its tuition. The university’s spokesman, Mr Ademola Adekoya on the 18th of March, 2019 told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the rumour was the handiwork of mischief-makers.
“The story is not correct. No iota of truth in it,” Adekoya said. He said the university’s Governing Council also had not made any recommendation for the increase of school fees.
LASU Tuition Hike Over The Year
LASU’s tuition was increased in 2005 from N250 to N25,000 under former Gov. Bola Tinubu’s regime.
Former governor of Lagos State, Babajide Raji Fashola also increased the fee from N25,000 to N197,000 for Arts and Humanities’ students, and N350,000 for medical students in 2011.
Reports had it that the former governor, on the 11th of June 2014, announced the reversal of the increased LASU fee to the old rate of N25,000 across the board after a series of protests by the National Association of Nigeria Students and students of Lagos State University.
