LAUTECH Students’ Union threaten to sue school over fees spike

The Students’ Union of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, has threatened to sue the institution over the recent tuition fees spike announced by the management of the school.

The students of the troubled school, jointly owned by Oyo State and Osun State, are now to pay between N200 thousand and N300 depending on their faculties, a big jump from around N65 thousand tuition fees regime.

The school said the spike, now condemned by the SU and a student-based anti-neoliberalism movement, was in response to the ‘financial realities’ it faces.

However, in an effort targeted at ensuring the new fees regimes does not take effect, the SU now threatens legal action against the university over the spike.

This was contained in a statement signed by the SU President, Abiodun Oluwaseun and obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday.

“We will not stand by and watch while we are made to pay more and more for things that should be ours by right,” said Mr Oluwaseun. “We surely shall fight with our entire arsenal, any of attempt to commercialize education.”

“We will take legal actions against such injustice, we deserve a 21st-century funding.”

The threat of legal action is coming after the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the University merely concluded a 3-day fasting and prayer session with the current situation of the school being at the centre of their supplications.

Meanwhile, the school on Wednesday announced expulsion of four students, including a son of the former secretary to Osun State Government, Moshood Adeoti, over post-SU election violence.

Eight others were suspended.
