Next Gen Intern’s Diary: Insights Gained Fueling My Quest for Continuous Growth

As I conclude my internship with Crisp Nigeria as a participant in the CJID’s Campus Reporter/Next Gen Internship programme, I reflect on a period filled with significant learning experiences and professional growth.

Throughout the last month of the programme which spanned between November and December, I engaged in various activities that further enhanced my understanding of journalism and storytelling. More importantly, I grasped the essence and style of in-depth reporting.

The month began with a valuable meeting with my supervisor, Mr. James Ojo, who commended my previous work, particularly the story on out-of-school children. His encouragement motivated me to embrace the challenges ahead.

The first story I explored this month was “Analysis: How Can Africa and Others Harness Potentials of Rising Youth Population?” This article examined how Africa, particularly Nigeria, can harness its rising youth demographic to drive economic growth and development. It also required me to conduct an in-depth analysis of the continent with the highest youth population. This research involved analysing various countries’ strategies and policies to empower young people.

As the month progressed, I wrote more articles. One of these articles: “Obasanjo, Gowon: Politicians Who Held Top Leadership Positions in Their 30s.” highlighted notable politicians who rose to leadership positions early in their careers, emphasising their contributions to Nigerian politics and the impact of youthful leadership on governance.

I also produced another significant article titled “From Grace to Grass: Olajumoke Onibread and the Reality of Overnight Success.” This piece explored Olajumoke Orisaguna’s rise to fame as a model and her subsequent challenges, shedding light on the often-volatile nature of success in the public eye.

At the beginning of December, I closely monitored Namibia’s elections while engaging with various sources to gather insights into the country’s political landscape. Through this exercise, I produced an article “Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah: Meet Namibia’s First Female President-Elect” that discussed Namibia’s President-Elect’s campaign strategies, the significance of her victory for women’s representation in politics, and the challenges she faced during her campaign. This story underscored the importance of female leadership in Africa.

In my final article for the month: “How Challenges with Birth Registration Could Affect Nigerian Children’s Future,” I examined the systemic barriers that hinder access to birth registration and discussed the long-term implications for children’s rights and opportunities in Nigeria.

Lessons, Challenges and Resolutions

This month has been particularly enlightening as I learnt the importance of creative storytelling. My supervisor emphasised crafting engaging introductions and concise subheadings to enhance reader engagement.  I also learnt to conduct thorough research, which is crucial for producing well-informed articles.

Constructive feedback served as my backbone during this period. I learned to embrace it as a vital tool for growth. The corrections provided by my supervisor and other staff at Crisp Nigeria helped me refine my writing style and improve my overall storytelling approach.

One of the challenges I encountered was learning effective time management while juggling multiple stories. Although the pressure to meet deadlines often overwhelmed me, the experience has taught me valuable lessons about setting priorities and staying organised.

Other challenges such as navigating complex topics like youth demographics, and researching political developments in Namibia also proved tasking but were ultimately rewarding.

To overcome these challenges, I implemented several resolutions:

Prioritisation: Adopting this as a structured approach helped me manage tasks more effectively.

Resource Utilisation: Leveraging various resources allowed me to understand complex topics thoroughly.

Embracing Feedback: Viewing feedback as a tool for growth enabled me to enhance my writing significantly.

My last month with Crisp Nigeria marked a pivotal moment in my internship journey. The skills and insights gained during this period will undoubtedly shape my future endeavours in journalism. I am immensely grateful to CJID and Crisp Nigeria for their unwavering support throughout this transformative experience. As I conclude this chapter, I look forward to new opportunities to continue honing my skills–after all, learning is a continuous process.
