UNIOSUN Shuts Down Law Campus Indefinitely

The management of Osun State University has shut down activities at the Ifetedo Campus of the University due to a protest. The was contained in a memo signed by the Registrar of the University, Gafar Shittu. The memo directed all students to vacate the University facilities at the College of Law in Ifetedo by 4 pm on Saturday, 20th February 2021.

The protest was a result of new policies implemented by the University which the students find uncomfortable. The university increased the accommodation fee from ₦60,000 to ₦80,000, while the number of occupants in each room was also increased from four to six. The university also banned cooking by students in the hostel.

The memo, dated 20th February 2021 and titled ‘Indefinite Closure of the College of Law, Ifetedo Campus,’ reads in part: “The management has been monitoring the unruly behaviour of many of the students of the College of Law, Ifetedo Campus which has led to the breakdown of law and order in the campus, the situation could not be brought under control.”

It continued: “Hinged on the above, the Vice-Chancellor has directed that the Campus be closed down indefinitely. All students in Ifetedo Campus of the University should leave the campus with immediate effect. Any student found in any of our facilities at Ifetedo Campus latest by 4pm today will have themselves to blame.”

The protest, which started on Friday the 19th of February, escalated on Saturday prompting the university management to order the immediate closure of the school. In a chat with one of the students over the protest, he said: “It would have been better if the hostel condition is okay, we will be sleeping and rats will be jumping up and down in our room, no light, no water, we often kill snakes, scorpions and the likes.”
