A student of Cross River State University of Technology (CRUTECH) has died after drowning in a swimming pool on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Barnabas Otu, a 100-level student of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning.
The unfortunate incident occurred at Orange Resort, a popular hotel in Akai-Efa, Calabar, where the students had gone to celebrate after their matriculation ceremony.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the University, Mr Onen Ebri Onen, confirmed the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He, however, stated that he did not have full details of the incident.
“I can confirm that the incident is true, but it happened when we were busy at the matriculation ceremony. So for now, I don’t really have full details on it,” he said.
Police Spokesperson in Cross River State, DSP Irene Ugbo, also confirmed the incident, adding that the police were investigating the matter.
This incident increases the tally to four students of the Cross River State University of Technology who have drowned this year.
Three students of the institution reportedly drowned in Abakpa river in Ogoja LGA of Cross River State, where they had gone swimming in January.
