The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, in Osun State, has announced the tragic death of a Part IV medical student at the College of Health Sciences, Oreoluwa Adewale, whose cause of death remains unknown.
According to the union, the student reportedly collapsed just as he was about to commence his oral medical examination. Efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.
In a statement, the union described Oreoluwa as “a brilliant mind,” noting that his sudden passing has deeply shaken the university community. “This unexpected and unimaginable event has shaken our campus to its core, reminding us once again of the fleeting nature of life,” the statement read.
The union extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, and colleagues, particularly members of the Great Ife Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA).
“We specifically commiserate with the Medical Students Association and the entire 400-level medical and dental class,” the statement added. “To lose a peer and a friend is an unbelievably heavy burden, and we share in your profound grief.”
While acknowledging the demanding nature of medical training and the pressures students face, the union also urged students to prioritise their health and well-being. “The pressure to succeed is heavy, but we must remember that our health and well-being come first,” it stated.
The release concluded with a prayer for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul.
