The Federal University Oye-Ekiti hosted the 4th South-West regional annual competition of the Committees of Deans of Engineering and Technology (CODET) on the 4th of July, 2019 at the Faculty of Engineering in the Ikole campus, Ekiti state.
The programme, which was chaired by a representative from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) was attended by three states in the south-west zone, including Osun state, Ekiti state and Ondo state.
Five schools from these states, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti, Elizade University, Ogun State University, Federal University of Technology Akure and Osun State University, competed in the programme.
The competition is an initiative of the Faculty and College of Engineering Deans all over Nigerian Universities, aimed at drawing out the creativity and innovation of Engineering students in a bid to create solutions to commonplace problems afflicting mankind.
CODET is a national programme that extends to all the regions in the country. Each region will host its own competitions and the three best students from each will meet in a final competition which will be held later this year in Abuja.
Last week’s programme featured the exhibition of several projects presented by students from 5 out of the 8 universities in the Zone.
Some projects done individually include the Smart Waste Management System, Fingerprint Attendance System and RFID Scanner, while the Robotic Vacuum cleaner, Line following Robot and Smart Irrigation system were done in groups.
For the group stage, Federal University of Technology, Akure won the competition with a total score of 70.33%; Afe Babalola University, Ado came second with a total of 70.25% and the Federal University of Technology, Akure with a total of 69%, came third.
In the singles category, the first position was won by Federal University Oye-Ekiti a the total score of 79% with a “smart waste bin” presentation. ABUAD took the second position with 68.5% and then FUTA scored 66.5% causing them to come in third place.
While speaking to UCJFUOYE, the single category first prize winner, Ati Josiah Ukibeno, a 400level student of Mechatronics Engineering from FUOYE said it was his first competition representing any institution and was shocked and at the same time elated to be announced the first prize winner of the competition.
“At first I honestly did not know I could win. After the presentation, I had a feeling that I would scale through, just did not expect to win the top spot.”
The president of the Faculty of Engineering in FUOYE, Osetoba Ayomide, also shared his experience during the competition.
“Several students from four different universities were present to exhibit their own projects, we all learnt a lot from one another. All the projects could solve some of the problems we are facing in this country”.
“We were all exposed to a lot of things budding Engineers must know and also we learnt to be creative and innovative,” he added.
The final competition, where the three best students from the southwest zone will be competing with other regions will be held in Abuja on the 1st of August, 2019.
