#EndSARS: WAEC relocates Cross River State Office to Akwa Ibom State

Following the vandalization and burning of its facility by hoodlums during the #EndSARS protests, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), on Tuesday, announced the relocation of its office in Calabar, Cross River State to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

This was contained in a statement signed by WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs, Demianus Ojijeogu.

Ojijeogu, who revealed that the relocation was “till further notice,” said the decision was occasioned by the “vandalization, looting and burning down of the WAEC Branch Office, Calabar by hoodlums on Saturday, October 24, 2020.”

“We wish to assure all stakeholders and the general public that normal operations would resume in the Calabar Branch Office once the status quo ante is restored.

“The Council wishes to apologise to its stakeholders and the general public for any inconvenience that may arise as a result of this relocation.

“We wish to use this medium to thank all those who have, in one way or the other, sympathised or identified with us during this trying period,” he said.

The WAEC office in Calabar was one of the institutions attacked on October 24, after hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protests in Calabar, the Cross River state capital.

The office equipment was looted and vandalized while certificates and records of candidates were completely burnt after the building was set ablaze by the arsonists.

Others facilities attacked include the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Channel 9, Cross River Basin Development Authority (CRBDA) and the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital.

‘Don’t leave,’ Cross River Governor begs WAEC

Meanwhile, the Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, has pleaded with the management of the West African Examination Council (WAEC), to shelve plans of relocating its Cross River state office to Akwa Ibom State.

Ayade, who visited the office on Tuesday to inspect the level of damage, promised to provide the examination body with an alternative office and operational vehicles.

“Moving out from here to Uyo will not serve the interest of Cross Riverians. I sincerely feel that we can have an emergency action plan that can help you restore this office.

“We will do everything we can because it is necessary for you to operate from here so that we can have the quality examination, quality teaching and ensure that Cross Riverians also prosper and become who they want to become in the society.

“But before we do that I have given an instruction that an emergency accommodation is provided for WAEC and we are also providing you two pick up vehicles to enable you to get back on your feet.

“If you leave the state it will affect the quality of WAEC examination in Cross River State. We have a list of all the items needed and we are going to do the best,” the governor said.
