Suspected hoodlums have mounted roadblocks in some part of Benin City, the Edo State capital, preventing vehicular movement.
This follows the state-government-imposed 24-hour curfew in the State on October 19, following some attacks and vandalism allegedly carried out by thugs in the disguise of #EndSARS protesters.
A witness told reporters that the hoodlums are extorting motorists with threats to destroy their vehicles if they refused to comply.
A motorist, who identified himself as Matthew, said the hoodlums are collecting money from them to allow them to pass.
“I’m seriously tired of this whole thing, even with the curfew that we think would make the whole situation calm down, these boys have also come to the road, blocked everywhere and they are collecting money from people to allow them to drive passed the roadblocks, can you imagine?”
According to another motorist who is a Public Health Practitioner, the hoodlums threatened to destroy her car if she refused to follow their order to pay some amount of money.
“Collecting money from people is totally wrong, what has that got to do with the whole situation? I’m an essential worker and this boy threatened to destroy my car if I don’t obey them and give them money, they collected one thousand Naira from me, this is totally unacceptable, please the government should hear this barbaric acts.”
Hoodlums allegedly mount roadblocks at Ramat Park, Aduwawa, Agbor Road, Eyaen, By-Pass axis, Urora and other parts of Benin City, the state capital.
Some residents also condemned the acts stating that it will further increase fear and tension in the state.
