Police Arrest Two Suspects for Gang-Raping 17-year-old Girl

Ekiti State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl.

This was disclosed in a statement released on the state official Twitter page on Wednesday.

It was gathered that the teenager was hawking water and soft drinks around 7 pm on Monday when she was attacked at the popular Oja’ba market in Ado-Ekiti.

According to The Nation,  the victim, who was with the three boys who were armed with broken bottles for about 45 minutes, was raped.

She was later taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment after which the incident was reported to the Ekiti Police Command and Office of the Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Erelu Fayemi.

According to the statement, Ekiti  State Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu noted that the Command has commenced an investigation into the matter, assuring that the case would be thoroughly prosecuted and ensure justice prevails.

The medical bill of the victim was offset by the Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Bisi Fayemi.

Erelu Bisi Fayemi, a world-renowned gender activist, is the Chairman of the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee.

Last year Mr Fayemi inaugurated the State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee (GBVMC) and the State Child Rights Implementation Committee.

Incessant cases of gang-rape and murder

Women in the country have continued to experience the incidence of rape, sexual harassment, gang-rape and murder.

Uwa Omozuwa, a 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin died after she was assaulted inside a hall in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ikpoba Hill, Benin City on May 13, where she went to read.

Also, an 18-year-old girl, identified as Bello Barakat, was also reportedly gang-raped and murdered by unknown men in Ibadan on Monday.

The incident occurred at her parents’ house in the Akinyele area of Ibadan.
