The management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto has split the Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies into two and disbanded one of its departments. Modern European Languages and Linguistics (MELL), has now been divided into three new departments.
This development was announced through the official Facebook page of one of the lecturers at the former MELL department, Dr Mansur Isah Buhari, on Wednesday 18th of May, 2022.
According to him, the Faculty of Arts and Islamic Studies has been split into the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies.
Professor Isah Maishanu, the new Dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies also confirmed the development, noting that the information is true.
According to the information obtained from Prof. Maishanu, Dr M.G. Wali was appointed the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies. Also, Professor Ibrahim Shehu Sidi from the new Department of English and Literary Studies was appointed as the Dean of the new Faculty of Arts while Dr Umar Jabbi from the Department of History and International Studies was appointed as the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
In the statement of Prof. Maishanu, “Dr Z. M. Dogondaji is the Faculty Examination Officer, Arabic and Islamic Studies while Dr Nazir Abbas from Nigerian Languages is the Faculty Examination Officer, Arts.”
Meanwhile, Prof. Maishanu said that Dr N. S. Sokoto was also appointed as the Head of the Department of Arabic and Literary Studies.
Having contacted, two lecturers at the former MELL department, Mallam Ibrahim Garba and Mallam Bello Danladi Dogondaji, both attested to the source of the information, confirming the credibility of the source.
“The university has split the Faculty and the department, but the development won’t be pasted on the notice board because the school is on strike,” Mallam Garba said.
Meanwhile, Mallam Bello Danladi Dogondaji clarified that– until the disbanded time, the department had four units namely; the English Language unit, Literature, Linguistics and French unit respectively while confirming the new departments.
“The new three departments are the Department of English and Literary Studies, Department of French and the Department of Linguistics,” Mallam Dogondaji said.
Additionally, Mallam Dogondaji added that now that the Faculty was split into two, the Faculty of Arts now contains six departments.
“The MELL Department that was disbanded now has three separate departments. We have the Department of English and Literary Studies, and the Head of the department is Dr Abubakar Atiku Alkali. We have the Department of Linguistics, having Dr Umar Ahmad appointed as the HOD and the Department of French having Professor Umaru Kiro appointed as its HOD.
“The other three departments under the Faculty of Arts are the Department of History and International Studies, the Department of Nigerian Languages and the Department of Mass Communication,” Mallam Bello Danladi Dogondaji explained.
A final development at the new Faculty of Arts was the appointment of Dr A.M Mijinyawa as the Head of the Department of Mass communication.
