UDUS Student Creates Mobile Application

Borne out of boredom, a 200 level chemistry department student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, known as Usman Hamidu Bawa has designed an educational and well functioning application to be used by his school mates while stuck at home.

The application designed by the student has some features which make it similar to the other social media platforms created to enhance easy communication between points.

While speaking with CAMPUS REPORTER, Usman Hamidu Bawa said that he created the application named ‘Inside UDUS’ earlier this year for only Danfodites to have access to school programs and some lectures notes before the pandemic.

Hamidu said: “The application, ‘Inside UDUS’ provides soft copies of General Studies materials, Management Information System’s portal for easy registration and result checking. It also allows users to note down some key points from lecturers as they dictate while in lecture rooms.”

When asked if the knowledge of designing application was acquired on the UDUS campus, he replied that he had acquired the knowledge before gaining admission into Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and felt like doing something great for the benefit of his colleagues.

“I gained the knowledge of programming and how to design applications somewhere [else] before I gained admission into UDUS. Then I thought it would be a good idea if I make something like ‘Inside Udus’ for the benefit of my colleagues and [the] progress of my higher institution,” he explained.

CAMPUS REPORTER gathered that despite designing the application earlier in the year, upgrading it with some features to meet and suit the best interest of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Students has been his achievement so far during the shutdown of schools amidst Covid-19 pandemic.

“I designed the application before the outbreak of the pandemic, so during the lockdown and shutdown of schools, I felt like adding chat/conversation feature where Danfodites can chat with their long lost friends that they’re missing, so, among the features, the application is having now is that it also brings Danfodites together, no matter how far they are from one another,” Hamidu added.

Hamidu advised Danfodites to make use of the application politely and effectively to meet the sole aim of the designer and also encouraged colleagues Nigeria students in other tertiary institutions to explore their knowledge they had before or while on campus to aid the progress their institutions and be of help to colleagues at this trying time of Covid-19 pandemic.

“My advice to my fellow colleagues is that they should please make use of the ‘Inside UDUS’ application very well and politely so as to meet my sole aim of designing it for them. I would be pleased if used positively and be moved to think of other ways of advancing their means of communication while on and outside the campus and have easy access to school programs.

“I will also urge my colleagues and other tertiary institutions’ students to please make use of their knowledge to help others rather than keeping it to themselves as the growth and future of education in Nigeria lies also in our hands,” Hamidu concluded.
