The Students Union Government (SUG) of the University of Jos has elected new executives to lead the affairs of the Union for the 2019/2020 academic year.
According to the official election results signed by Dr Augustine Azi, the Deputy Dean of Students’ Affairs and the Electoral Committee Chairman and other members of the committee, the election that took place on Friday across the faculties saw the victory of Joshua Adankala Danladi, a 400 Level student of Civil Engineering as President.
Mr Danladi won with 890 votes, while his opponents, Dusu Timothy Sunday and Yakubu Andy Dafur, received 610 and 41 votes, respectively.
Dina Olivia Joshua clinched the position of Vice President unopposed. Others who were unopposed included Illah Lot Ajeh as General Secretary, Joshua Turna Lumi, Jessica Gye Iche, Zaka Aondoseer Emmanuel and Shitse Paul as Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Assistant Secretary and Welfare Secretary, respectively.
This year’s election came with a high level of apathy as poor turnout was recorded at various polling units. Responding to this, a 300 Level student of Mining Engineering who asked not to be named stated that: “Maybe the students are tired of the SUG executives canvassing for votes respectively without implementing their promises after the election.”
Other elected executives are Ebenezer Chindike IIoadinma as Public Relations Officer, Gowok Wulime Joshua as Director of Sports while Oliver Nelson Bintan was elected as the Director of Socials.
Even though under poor compliance to the COVID-19 guidelines, the election was free of violence at all the polling units.
