UNILAG2022: Team AAUA Ready For NUGA Games

More than two dozen athletes will be adorning the Team AAUA colours at the 26th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) which is scheduled to start on the 16th of March 2022 at the University of Lagos.

Contingents from the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba (AAUA) including big-name athletes will represent the institution in various events ranging from track and field events to combat sports, table tennis, scrabble, badminton, tennis and swimming.

One of the big names on the list is Jackson Oluwafemi who is currently the Sports Director of the AAUASU. Jackson will compete in the Judo event and he will be joined by Alfred Odunayo.

Another massive name in the Team AAUA squad is Ugwu Emeka who won the MVP in the Taekwondo event in 2017. He will be hoping to capitalise on his experience in the competition once again.

Also, Ademoyegun Elijah will represent the team AAUA in the tennis event. His experience in the competition gives him an edge for the team.

In the badminton event, the likes of Ologbosere Oluwatimilehin, Aluko Favour, Oyedepo Oluwadamilola, Ihensekben Blessing, Abiola Motunrayo, Adegbeite Toibat, Ayodele Glory, and Ugwu Emeka will represent the University at the 26th edition of the NUGA.

The first Nigerian University Games took place in 1966 and was held at the University of Ibadan with just five Nigerian universities in attendance. However, NUGA currently has over eighty universities as members including public and private institutions. 

Over the years, many university athletes have represented Nigeria at various international competitions like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Some of the notable ones include Seyi Olofinjana (Football), Vincent Enyeama (Football), Bisi Afolabi (Athletics), Olumide Oyedeji (Basketball), Chika Chukwumerije (Taekwondo) and Olusoji Fasuba (Athletics), who is the current African record holder in 100 metres (Men) with a time of 9.85 seconds
