UNIZIK holds orientation for students going on industrial training, to start weather forecast

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on Thursday held its 2017/2018 Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) orientation programme.

Addressing the Students,  the vice-chancellor Joseph Ahaneku, speaking through the deputy vice-chancellor academics, Charles Esimone, explained that the SIWES orientation programme was designed to prepare and expose students ahead of the SIWES attachment

He said that SIWES is a key factor that could engender industrialisation and economic development in Nigeria by equipping students of the tertiary institutions with the necessary practical skills.

The vice chancellor disclosed that over the years, the university had received commendation reports from employers on the good work etiquettes of the UNIZIK students during their training.

Prof Ahaneku further commended the SIWES unit of the University for having remained focused and committed in their extra efforts at scouting for placements in industries for students.

Meanwhile, the head of the department of geography and metrology at the school, Emmanuel Ezenwaji, said a team of young researchers, who are students of the department, had developed a map for the university which would be presented to the vice chancellor.

He added that the department would soon begin to predict weather in the University.

Mr Ezenwaji dropped the hints during the department’s public lecture held on Thursday.

The guest speaker, Phil Eze, a professor, who said Nigeria has “over sixteen ecological zones, barrier islands, saltwater, marshes, mangroves, savannah, Sahel savannah and a host of others”, urged the government to protect the country’s natural capital.
